Castello di Volpaia is its own little self-contained village dating from the 10th century. The Volpaia family took its name from the village itself. Lorenzo della Volpaia (1446-1512), an architect, goldsmith, mathematician and clockmaker, founded a Florentine dynasty of clockmakers and scientific-instrument makers that included his sons Camillo, Benvenuto and Eufrosino, and nephew Girolamo. As clockmaker, Lorenzo gained fame and honor with the construction of the Orologio dei Pianeti (Planetary Clock). Lorenzo also built the clock at the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. He was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci and took part in the discussions on the placement of Michelangelo’s David. The della Volpaia family instruments are on display at the Science Museums in Florence and Greenwich (United Kingdom), the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence and the Adler Planetarium in Chicago.

The Riserva, the castello’s flagship, is 100% Sangiovese culled from the estate’s best vineyard sites and oldest vines. It is aged twenty-four months in a mixture of woods including a small percentage of new small oak French barrels. The new wood is a very small part of the equation, though, adding a bit of texture and the barest hint of vanilla to a nose that is really built to express the warm, fragrant Radda-in-Chianti terroir. The newly-delivered 2019 comes from the best vintage since 2016 (albeit less mammoth and more classic in character) - it’s a wine that has everything turned up just a few notches higher than usual. There’s a lot of purple on the edges of that vibrant cherry red with a nose of black cherry with a hint of chocolate covered blueberry, buttery leather, seed-y spices like cardamom or fennel and lots of sun-warmed summer hay and herbs. There is a chunk of minty chocolate in the middle and the aforementioned dash of vanilla at the end that leads to some chewy, briary tannin and very nice finishing acidity.

Wine Spectator: 94 Points

A bright yet firmly structured Chianti Classico, with iron, leather, almond and floral accents surrounding a core of cherry fruit. Sleek and intense, with a lingering finish echoing cherry, red berry and mineral notes. Best from 2024 through 2040.

James Suckling: 93 Points

Aromas of sweet berries, crushed stones and violets follow through beautifully to a medium-bodied with fine, integrated tannins and a pretty finish. Crisp and crunchy with structure.

Wine Advocate: 93 Points

Here's a wine I highly recommend. Packaged with a black label, the Volpaia 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva is certified organic Sangiovese from a site with sandstone soils that rises up to a cool 600 meters above sea level in Radda in Chianti. These well-priced results are perfumed and vibrant with black fruit, crushed stone and wild rose. I especially appreciate those drying mineral tones that match the wine's elegant, mid-weight mouthfeel. Some 60,000 bottles were released.
