Scar of the Sea was established in 2012 and is owned & operated by Mikey & Gina Giugni. It's fair to say that Mikey & Gina are making some of the best wine in San Luis Obispo County today. Scar of the Sea focuses on working with farmers who are instrumental in farming for the future and making wines with as little intervention as possible. The wines are made with the intention to tell a story of where they come from, the people who farm them, and reflect each vintage under the California sun.
This is made from the organic Rancho Vinedo Vineyard, and fermented with native yeast in old oak barrel, kept on its lees for 17 months. (With minimal sufur at bottling this is pretty much a natural Chardonnay.) The nose opens with bright lemon oil, butterscotch, nectarine, and lemon flesh. The palate is light with zippy zippy acid and a flavor set that call to mind Chablis: lemon zest and flesh, nectarine, a hit of oak and a salted almond character to finish.
