Stephane Moreau took over the estate from his father in 1999 and over the next two decades he made a series of changes, converting to organic viticulture, fermenting only with native yeasts and harvesting by hand. The result was a range of truly outstanding Chablis, wines with great texture, precision and a sense of place. Stephane passed away suddenly in 2016 and his wife Virginie has taken over the domaine's management. She continues to grow and vinify her wines according to the same principles and the results are no less enchanting.
Domaine Moreau-Naudet is a great source for excellent, nonconformist Chablis. Taking cues from legendary producers like Raveneau and Dauvissat, Moreau-Naudet makes ripe, shapely Chablis that define minerality with deeply concentrated substance. The flinty and austere wines that have become the norm for this region are less a reflection of the region’s true terroir and more a side-effect of high yield, early picking and machine harvesting. Moreau-Naudet does the opposite. By picking late and harvesting by hand, as well as tending their vineyards biodynamically, Moreau-Naudet is able to make complex wines that many Chablis producers with wines similarly priced have not.
