Mikey Guigni, owner/winemaker at Scar, just keeps getting better and better as a winemaker. What he and Gina Guigni (Lady of the Sunshine) are doing in their little corner of the Central Coast is thrilling. As they have settled into the SLO Coast, taken over more and more of the farming, as well as developed great relationships with the growers, the wines are becoming ever more expressive.
Inspired by the wines of Bérêche in Champagne, the NV Chardonnay Rancho Tepusquet Solera comes from vines planted in 1973 and includes vintages from 2014-2021. It has complex aromas that segue from smoky reduction to oyster shell, ripe quince, beeswax, acacia and green herbs. The medium-bodied palate is expressive and layered. Fragrant fruit, flint, honey and herbal layers sweep across the mouth. It has a satiny texture and balance of tangy acidity and an impressively long finish. Don't let the non-vintage designation fool you—this is a wonderfully complex, delicious wine that will offer pleasure over the next decade or more.
